Letters For Them: Project Update

Hi One World Readers,

Thanks to Jennifer for inviting me write for the blog on behalf of my project, Letters for Them, and for introducing the project to this blog a few weeks ago. My name is Robin and I have just completed my junior year at RISD (the Rhode Island School of Design), I am majoring in Graphic Design. I was adopted from China when I was about 8 months old and grew up in New York.

This past semester I took a class in RISD's photo department called Family Album and there I was able to start working on a project that I had been dreaming of for a while. Letters for Them is meant to be a place to send and collect letters to birthparents, whether you know them or not. As many of us do not know our first parents for one reason or another, I created Letters for Them as a stand-in "address" to compensate the lack of an actual address.

I received a few letters before the project was due and printed them into a book, which now stands as a mockup for what I hope the project can grow into over time.

Above, is the cover. Below are a few spreads of letters contributed to the project.

If you or any one you know who is an adoptee (beyond Chinese adoptees as well, this is open to all adoptees) please feel free to share this project or get in contact with me (rhilkey@risd.edu). No pressure at all, but if you've ever wanted to write a letter of this nature, please consider contributing it to the project. There is no due date, so take your time. More information on sending letters can be found here.

Thanks!
Robin
