Dear Auntie Sarie,
I miss you, “victim of nice,”
I miss your moist roasted peanuts,
listening to you and Mitsuye gab in the back of the car as I drove
all of you with Mom to Los Angeles for our special outings in Little Tokyo.
I miss the scent of Hawaii’s stories that you carried everywhere you went,
the lilt in your voice,
the glint in your eye,
and the sparkle of your spirit.
Hope you aren’t being too nice, wherever you now are,
because you deserve to dance in the light,
and know that we love you, always and forevermore.
